Jackson Browne Sues McCain
// August 15th, 2008 // POLITICAL ARENA
Singer, songwriter Jackson Browne is mad as hell and he’s not going to take it anymore. He has filed a lawsuit against McCain and the Republican Party for failing to obtain a license to use one of his songs in a television commercial.
The pro-McCain ad is about Obama’s “brilliant” energy plan consisting of tire inflation. The song “Running on Empty” can be heard in the background. Browne claims that the song is being used without his approval and creates the false impression that he supports McCain.
Only those who are ignorant of Browne’s liberal views would mistakenly think he supports McCain. Shortly after the Three Mile Island nuclear accident in March 1979, Browne joined with several musician-friends to found the anti-nuclear organization, Musicians United for Safe Energy. Political protest came to the fore in Browne’s music in the 1986 album, Lives in the Balance, an explicit condemnation of Reaganism and U.S. policy in Central America. In 2004 he was part of Moveon.org campaigns in an effort to elect Kerry.
The only problem with the lawsuit is that the ad is not from McCain’s campaign. It was created by the Ohio Republican Party. The McCain Campaign has released the following statement:
“This campaign has never run any ad using any portion of Mr. Browne’s song. If the complaint names the McCain campaign, Mr. Browne and his lawyers have picked the wrong target, and John McCain’s name should obviously be removed from this lawsuit immediately”
McCain has been angering some in Hollywood of late; much to my liking. Recently Warner Music demanded that YouTube remove “Obama Love,” a montage of press fawning over Sen. Barack Obama that had been posted on McCain’s official YouTube channel. We had it up here on MonkeyCrash as well and sure enough instead of watching the video you get a message stating, “This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Warner Music Group.” The video featured the song, “Can’t take my eyes off you” by Frankie Valli; therein lies the copyright dispute. Could it really be that Warner Music is in the tank for Obama and they were upset that “Obama Love” had been viewed more than 200,000 times in its first three days on the Web, and helped McCain beat Obama in total views on YouTube for that week?
In addition, Mike Myers earlier this week asked that McCain take down a web ad that mocked Obama’s celebrity and used a “we’re not worthy” clip from his movie Wayne’s World.
McCain must be doing something right if Hollywood is against him!
